Viola by Charles Ervin Violins, Inc. Modeled after Andrea Amati, Cremona, 1574
One of the earliest violas in existence, the original by Andrea Amati has been the concert instrument of a solo artist. It was featured in Simone Sacconi's book, The Secrets of Stradivari, 1972. Its dimensions are: length 418 mm, width upper bouts 202 mm, width lower bouts 404 mm. Dr. Ervin met with the artist in order to measure and photograph the viola directly. He made the viola illustrated in these photos for Edward J. Lawrence, a master teacher of violin, viola, and cello in Houston, Texas. Additional Views: Front Closeup (62KB) |
